Master contract and project outline

Master project/Master contract

All students taking post-graduate courses must complete a master project. This project should aim at being an independent, relevant, critical and creative work with a specific focus. The work should reflect a high artistic and/or scientific level, individuality and originality and may include different forms of expression, as for example a concert, a thesis, a composition, a recording or lecture.

The different master and advanced projects carry ECTS credits varying from
30-60, depending on the curriculum for the study programme. The contract’s intention is to clarify the rights and duties of the student, the tutor and the Academy during this process, and to be of assistance to all parties in executing their contribution to the completion of the work in the best possible manner.

For those students taking a master performance course, the project outline will form the basis for the composition of the examination commission, and it is important for the external censor to have information about the focus of the project when making an assessment. A project outline with a clear title is absolutely necessary if you wish your special subject to be explicitly mentioned on your final degree (the title of your master work will then figure on the front page).

How to proceed

a) Project outline

If you have not already done so, you must first of all make a project description. By all means discuss this with your tutor (for performance this will be with your main instrumental tutor, if nothing else has been agreed upon) the formulation of the description. After this, send him/her the project outline and make an agreement for a master contract.

b) Master contract

When the contract has been completed, it must be signed by the student and tutor (if necessary the secondary tutor – namely the principal main instrument tutor for performance and special subjects) BEFORE it is submitted to the Academy. Put it in an envelope addressed to the examination office and deliver it to the administraton. The project outline must be submitted together with the contract.

Both student and tutor will receive a copy of the contract in their pigeon-holes when all the signatures are in order (this happens consecutively), and the original is kept on the student’s file. The examination office also receives a copy for examination planning purposes.

Applicable for students taking purely performance programmes

A “creative” master work does not necessarily mean that it has to be newly “rehearsed”/practised. It is just as important that the work is comprehensive /integrated and has a clear focus. The frame around the repertoire can, for example, be an important part of the master work (the form of communication, the target group, the concert location etc). A good guideline is to consider this master work as your future trademark, - something which illustrates your top competence as a musician when you are looking for a job at the end of your studies. Consult your tutor/main instrument tutor. He/she can help you with a realistic restriction of the scope of your work.
