Master's Degree Programme in Conducting

Admission to the programme requires a Bachelor's Degree in Music with 80 ECTS credits in performance and 60 ECTS credits in conducting. Tuition is in English or Norwegian.

This programme aims to give the student the necessary background to work as a professional choral or orchestral conductor. The applicant should indicate which of these alternatives she wishes to give priority to. The programme includes subjects like conducting techniques, analysis, instrumentation and piano/score reading etc. The applicant is expected to have reached a high level on her principal instrument, and have a relatively wide experience in leading different ensembles. The applicant must also have musical experience that enables her to relate to the artistic qualities and intentions of the music.

Audition

The audition is in two stages. The first is conducted in the fourth week of February, the second in the third week of March.

1. Instrumental and conducting performance (February 2011)

The applicant must perform on two instruments, of which one must be piano or organ, the other must be an orchestral instrument or voice. A high level of skill must be demonstrated on one of the instruments. Two pianos and string quartet / a vocal octet will be provided for the conducting performance. This stage will also contain an aural test and playing from orchestral/choral score.

2. Orchestral/choral performance (March 2011)

Applicants who pass the above parts of the audition will be summoned to an orchestral / choral audition. The scores will be individually announced approx. one month in advance.
