Advanced Studies for Solo instrumentalist or Chamber Music ensembles

Published: 20. October 2010

Admission requires a Bachelor's Degree in Music with 80 ECTS credits in performance. Students admitted to the Advanced Studies programme for Solo instrumentalists or Chamber music ensembles (only established ensembles can apply for this programme), are chosen after an audition where the applicants’ artistic and interpretative abilities are carefully evaluated. The programme includes several demanding concert engagements. Very few students are admitted each year. The programme leads to a Master's Degree in Music Performance. Tuition is in English or Norwegian.

The aim of the programme is to give particularly talented students and ensembles the basis for establishing a performing career at a high level. In order to achieve this goal the individual students and ensembles must further develop themselves as performers and communicators of music, increase their knowledge of repertoire, and in some cases develop their own form of specialization and a conscious attitude towards the communication of music.

Internship at The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra
Students of orchestral instruments admitted to the programme can apply for internships at the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. There is a separate audition for the internship and students accepted will receive a scholarship.

Entrance Examinations
The application for solo instrumentalists should include the following documents:

  • an audition programme in accordance with the repertoire requirements for the master's level programmes
  • a repertoire list of works studied of approx. 360 minutes duration

At the audition the applicant must

  • perform works chosen by the jury from the 45 minute programme submitted

For vocal applicants

The application for the course for chamber music ensembles should include the following documents:

  • a repertoire list of works studied by the ensemble of approx. 150 minutes duration. The list must contain works central to the type of ensemble concerned.
  • a resumé og the ensemble’s experience and practice in chamber music and an account of the ensemble’s intentions for the course of study.

At the audition the ensemble must

  • play those parts of their programme which the jury wishes to hear
  • attend an interview with the jury on the background of their application and intentions for the course

The aim of the course is to give particularly talented students and ensembles the basis necessary to become established artistic performers. In order to achieve this goal the individual students and ensembles must further develop themselves as performers and communicators of music at a high level, increase their knowledge of repertoire, and in some cases develop their own form of specialization and a conscious attitude towards the communication of music.
