Please read the proper sections of the Act, as well as the Examination Regulations at the Norwegian Academy of Music. The following text is only intended as a practical guideline.
As a general rule there are two kinds of appeals:
- Complaints regarding marks awarded - and right to explanation of assessment
- Complaints against procedural errors in connection with the examinations
Right to explanation of assessment
A student is entitled to an explanation of the assessment, which states the general principles for the mark awarded. The student must request an explanation, and the request must be made within a week after the mark has been made known, and never later than 3 weeks after this date. For oral examinations or assessments of practical skills, this request must be made immediately upon notification of the mark.
The explanation may be given orally or written, at the examiner's discretion. The explanation shall be given within two weeks after the candidate has requested it.
Though there is no requirement that the candidate requests an explanation before appealing against the mark awarded, the time limit for appeals is reckoned from the date the candidate receives the explanation.
Complaints regarding marks awarded
A candidate has the right to appeal against a mark awarded within three weeks after announcement of the examination results. The appeal must be made in writing, but it does not need to be founded. Upon receiving an appeal, the Academy will forward the examination in question to a new jury of examiners, who will review the exam without prior knowledge of the original mark or assessment.
The mark may be changed both in favour or disfavour of the candidate, and the mark awarded after the reviewal is considered final.
It is not possible to appeal against a mark awarded after an oral or practical examination, or an examination of such nature that it cannot be reviewd by a new jury of examiners. With such examinations, only a complaint on procedural errors may be laid forward.
Complaints against procedural errors
A procedural error is an error committed by the Academy which may have affected the candidate's performance, or the assessment of the performance. Complaints about procedural errors must be made within three weeks after the examination has taken place, or from such a time that the candidate should have become aware of the circumstances on which the complaint is based.
Complaints about procedural errors are ruled on by the Academy's appeals committee.
If the appeals committee rules in favour of the candidate, the mark given shall be rescinded. If it is found that formal errors were made that may have affected the performance of one or more candidates, the examination may be annulled - and the candidates will be given the right to attend a new examination.
