The International Realtime Music Symposium 2009

Published: 06. August 2009

From 10 to 15 August, The Norwegian Academy of Music is playing host to the second International Realtime Music Symposium, a collaboration between the Academy, the Norwegian Wind Ensenble and the School of Improvisational Music in New York. Over the course of the week, students from all over the world and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble’s professional musicians will work with composers and experts in improvisational music to create “realtime music” – music at the crossroads between contemporary composition and improvisation.

The instructors on the symposium come from New York as well as from the Norwegian Academy of Music’s jazz/improvisation and composition departments. Students on the course will take part in improvisation workshops as well as learning about and experiencing how improvisation can be integrated with composition in new and exciting musical statements. What makes this symposium unique is that the Norwegian Wind Ensemble are “artists in residence”, and will be functioning as “guinea pigs” for the course participants throughout the week.

The symposium kicks off with a major concert given by the Norwegian Wind Ensemble and contemporary music trio POING, conducted by Christian Eggen, on 10 August. They will give the Norwegian premiere of Eivind Buene’s Into the Void, a work commissioned for the NWE and POING and first performed at the 2008 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. In the spirit of “realtime” music, this work blends fixed, composed elements with sections of improvisation. The symposium will close with a free concert on Saturday 15 August, in which works created over the course of the week will be presented.
In addition to the concerts, many of the lectures will be open to the public, as well as the orchestral workshops in which the NWE will work with students and instructors.
The Norwegian Academy of Music is proud to collaborate on the International Realtime Music Symposium with two leading institutions. The School of Improvisational Music provides jazz music education at the highest international level, specializing in crossover between composition and improvisation. The Norwegian Wind Ensemble, based in Halden, south-east Norway, is one of the country’s most innovative music institutions and has made “realtime music” one of its trademarks.
